Two by-elections have been called for Thursday 21 December to vote for a County Councillor and District Councillor in Blaby District.
The by-elections follow the recent resignation of Councillor Geoff Welsh, prompting the need for a new District Councillor and County Councillor.
Voters in the Blaby and Glen Parva Division will choose their new County Councillor while constituents in the Glen Parva Ward will vote for a new District Councillor.
There is also an election being held on the same day for one Parish Councillor position on Blaby Parish Council.
Blaby District Council is in charge of running all the elections and the deadlines and information about candidate nominations, registering for a postal or proxy vote or applying for a free Voter Authority Certificate can be found at By-elections on 21 December 2023 – Blaby District Council
Graeme Wardle, the County Council’s Head of Member Services, said: “The County Council makes decisions on local services and issues that affect us all. Whether it is school places, roads, transport, local health, social care or waste disposal, everyone in Leicestershire uses one of these services or may need them in the future. Often people miss out on the chance to vote by assuming they’re registered when they’re not – we’d encourage people not to miss out and make sure they use their vote.”
Julia Smith, Blaby District Council Chief Executive and (Deputy) Returning Officer, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff Welsh for his long and valuable service to both Blaby District Council and Leicestershire County Council and wish him all the best.
“His departure is an opportunity for a new member to join our Council and help shape the future of our District for the benefit of residents. I also want to urge people to use their vote for this important position which is there to promote the interests of local residents. We understand people will be busy in the run-up to Christmas but polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 21 December so there is plenty of time to cast your vote.”
More information, including the candidates standing in the election, will be available on the County Council’s website at Blaby and Glen Parva by-elections | Leicestershire County Council
