Coronation weekend in Thurlaston

Thurlaston celebrated the long weekend of King Charles coronation in style, with various events to mark this historic occasion. We would like to thank everyone who decorated the village with flags and bunting, people who decorated their houses and especially those who used their skill and imagination to build some wonderful scarecrows!

The winners of the Scarecrow Competition were 1st Mick & Brenda James, 2nd The Daine’s family, 3rd Pauline & Stephen Hodgson. Best Dressed House – Jean Wilson.

The damp conditions on Coronation day did not deter folk who came to join with friends and neighbours to watch the day’s events unfolding on screens in the marquee. They enjoyed tucking into a wide selection of wonderful homemade cakes, kindly provided by a host of bakers in the village, and at lunchtime could choose between 3 local businesses – Dom, Elephant and Castle, and Tiffin Waali to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

The lovely flowering cherry tree with its commemorative plaque was officially unveiled by Councillor Maggie Wright and a special presentation of a Coronation silver spoon was made to Oakley Bennett, being the baby in the village who had been born closest to Coronation Day itself. A wonderful assortment of raffle prizes were drawn later in the afternoon and we must thank Asda, as well as all the village businesses for their contributions along with prizes kindly donated by local individuals.

Fortunately the weather for The Big Lunch on Sunday was warm and sunny, providing perfect conditions for a number of villagers to come along to the field with their own picnics and enjoy the company and the sunshine.

The ‘Big Help Out’ on Monday was well attended, despite the damp conditions causing some of the sprucing up activities to be put on hold for the moment. Not to be daunted, the enthusiastic volunteers set to work clearing and tidying the vegetation on the field, sanding down and cleaning seats and equipment, and even sanding down the bus shelter in preparation for a new coat of paint once the weather allows! A well earned break for bacon butties gave the outdoor crew the chance to join the team of volunteers who had been working hard on cleaning tasks inside the village church.

We would like to thank everyone who helped to make the long weekend such a success – too many to list here, but we hope you know that your efforts and help were very much appreciated and helped to make this special weekend so memorable!
