Mike Storr first visited Enderby U3A several years ago telling us about the rise and fall of the music halls, but his introduction to his talk this time was a little different. He is a lifetime asthmatic and a near fatal episode spurred him into dedicating his efforts into raising as much money as possible for Asthma UK. He travels around to give his entertaining talks but makes no charge for his time or travel expenses, asking only for a donation. In the last few years he has raised over £46,000 pounds for Asthma UK, a truly inspiring and selfless effort!
Still able to tell a good tale, Mike entertained us with anecdotes and recitations from the music hall era. The first ever Pantomime Dame was Norman Evans and we had a hilarious introduction to him via an old film of a monologue given over a garden fence. Putting on an old hat, Mike became Stanley Holloway reciting ‘The Runcorn Ferry’ and adorned with a string of beads he came up to the present day with Pam Ayres advising ‘They should have asked my Husband’.
It was a gentle and funny afternoon full of nostalgia much enjoyed by all our members.
We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Enderby Civic Centre and also have a variety of interest groups, with something for everyone! If you would like to know more about us you can contact our membership secretary Anne on 07933165200 or visit our website at www.u3asites.org.uk/enderby
