Enderby Area U3A - A Royal Celebration

Our first monthly meeting after the Coronation of King Charles came several days after the event and it had been decided that the occasion should not pass by without notice. But how best to celebrate such an auspicious event? We had the venue, we had a suitable speaker, but what else?

Step forward ASDA. The Fosse Park store has long been a supporter of Enderby U3A and we were overjoyed to be awarded a Community Grant from them to be used entirely on providing a Coronation Party for our members. Not only that but they also provided  a raffle prize…a box full of so many goodies that it was too heavy for anyone to lift. We cannot thank ASDA enough for their generosity and made sure that the grant was used wisely to provide a party to remember.

In a festively decorated hall the afternoon started with a talk by Tony Noble affectionately known as “Nobby”, a sailor who had twice served tours of duty aboard the Royal Yacht Brittania. His anecdotes and photographs provided an entertaining glimpse of Royal life and the famous people who were welcomed aboard. After he had answered many questions he then settled down to continue his duties ashore by judging the Coronation hat competition and drawing the raffle. There was a quiz on each table with questions relating to Royalty which were not at all easy to answer and they were checked while tea was served….a great selection of sandwiches and cakes and a welcome cup of tea or coffee.

Finally and reluctantly it was time to end our special day with further thanks to ASDA for making it all happen and to our hard working committee who had spent so much time preparing the hall so beautifully.

Prosecco was provided and it fell to Nobby to propose the toast to our new King and finish with these words “I have been on many ships in my life but the most important ship of all is friendship” This surely is what our U3A is all about.
