Enderby Community Library August 2023

Our children’s summer activity days proved popular with record numbers attending. Children produced some fabulous beach themed craft items, played games, and made new friends. Huge thanks to Barbara and Audrey for running the sessions. The ongoing Summer Reading Challenge has had super interest with over 70 children taking part. Remember, you have until 2nd September to complete the challenge (certificates and medals are ready!)

Our annual garden trip saw over 30 people visit a garden in Newtown Linford. The extensive grounds, arboretum, large pond with colourful water lilies and animal sculptures in quirky corners proved popular as did the tea and cake on the terrace! The full proceeds of £250 were donated to National Garden Society nominated charities (including Macmillan and Marie Curie). Thanks to everyone who supported this event.

Some of our regular customers may have noticed our display about World War II. This is promoting a countrywide event called “Their Finest Hour” which is about digitising documents and stories from WWII to preserve them for future generations. Currently there are two local venues – Leicester Central Library (9th September) and Burbage Millennium Hall (17th September) able to digitise documents and stories from the war years. So, if you have a story to tell, or family documents, this is a great opportunity to get them recorded.

We’ve a new venture for us. Tuesday September 12th 2.30-4pm sees us hosting “Beat Police”. A local police officer will be available at the library to listen to residents’ concerns and suggestions. This is, hopefully, the start of a regular surgery which will aim to strengthen the relationship between the Police and local community.

Our usual activities are back to normal after the summer. Busy hands every Monday afternoon; adult games group the first Wednesday of the month; Adult social crafting re-starts Tuesday 12th September; pre-schoolers play and learning session is 30th August. Also don’t forget our next coffee morning Saturday 9th September – plenty of cake and bargain books and jigsaw puzzles.

An autumn date for your diaries: we’ll be celebrating National Poetry Day – October 5th with an evening event; tickets are £6 which includes wine & nibbles. A date is still to be finalised for local author Stewart Bint who will be chatting about his career and signing copies of his latest book. Watch this space for further details.

So, a busy time coming up. Come and visit us – we have new books in stock most weeks and heaps going on. We’d love to see you!
