The summer school holidays saw us hold 4 fantastic children’s sessions themed around the Olympics and France. Children and parents alike took part in the games and craft activities which our volunteers Barbara and Audrey had devised. A big thank you to them and our other library volunteers who supported these afternoons.
Our Summer Reading Challenge-promoted by Leicestershire County Libraries- has proved to be more popular than ever with around 90 children taking part. The scheme encourages children to maintain and develop their reading skills over the 6-week holiday and we are fortunate that our local schools encourage participation too. We’ve had lots of children achieve their completion certificates and gold medals. The scheme runs until 6th September so there’s still time to finish the challenge.
Our August Coffee morning was also French themed with our volunteers donning berets and stripy tee shirts (no onions or garlic thankfully!). We are incredibly grateful to everyone that supports us in our monthly get togethers; the cake bakers and refreshment servers, the washing up team, the pre-loved book & jigsaw donators, the washing up team, and of course our lovely customers who come in for a cuppa & a piece of cake, buy books and have a go on the raffle and tombola. Thank you all so much -we hope you enjoy coming as much as we enjoy seeing you! Our next one is Saturday September 14th 10am-1pm and we’d love to see you there.
Our normal activities continue as usual: Busy Hands every Monday; Over 60’s Games group Wednesday 4th September and 2nd October; and Creative Writing 28th September 10.30am to noon. Adult Social Crafting is Tuesday 17th September and 8th October. Our Pre-school activity hour (2-3pm) is Wednesday 25th September and 30th October.
And now onto news of future activities for your diaries. We’ll be celebrating National Poetry Day on Saturday October 5th which Julia will be hosting and her theme this year is Desert Island Poems – tickets are £5 (includes refreshments) and available from the library. We are also collaborating with Enderby Heritage Group. Elizabeth York is giving a talk about “Enderby Wills” and what we might learn from them. This is Saturday 7th September 2-4pm at the library and tickets are £5 (again includes refreshments) and available from the library. And finally in October, Saturday 26th, Dave Andrews a former BBC Radio Leicester presenter and producer is presenting his experiences around the discovery of the body of Richard III – “The Man, the Mystery & the Car Park”. Further details around tickets and timings will be announced later.
