Summer has finally arrived, and our children’s holiday sessions are in full swing. Barbara and Audrey are using the Olympics Games and France as their inspiration for the activities. We’ve seen children taking part in games (table football & ping pong proving very popular), as well as craft activities and, of course, lots of marvellous LEGO creations. Don’t miss out, the last two sessions are Tuesday 13th and 20th August, 2.30 – 4pm with a donation of £2 per child. Children do have to be accompanied by an adult – but adults are always welcome to join in! And not forgetting our pre-school children – the next afternoon session is Wednesday 28th August 2-3pm.
Our Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) was given a flying start this year when we were invited to the Danemill School Summer Fayre to sign up holiday readers. A huge thank you to Danemill Staff and pupils who gave us a lovely welcome. We had over 30 children register for the SRC on the day and currently have 82 actively taking part from schools across the area. The SRC encourages children aged 4 – 11 to maintain and develop their reading skills over the summer holiday by means of a poster, stickers and other fun activities, culminating in a certificate and gold medal. It’s not too late to enrol, the SRC lasts until 6th September so please encourage children to give it a try.
News of future dates for your diaries. We’ll be celebrating National Poetry Day on October 5th (a couple of days later than the actual day due to popular demand for a Saturday celebration) which Julia will be hosting – prepare to be engaged and entertained as usual! Also in October, Saturday 26th, Dave Andrews a former BBC Radio Leicester presenter and producer is presenting his experiences around the discovery of the body Richard III – “The Man, the Mystery & the Car Park”. Further details around tickets and timings will be announced later.
Our normal activities continue as usual: Busy Hands every Monday; Over 60’s Games group Wednesday 7th August and 4th September; and Creative Writing 31st August. Adult Social Crafting is taking a summer break (back Tuesday 17th September). Our next fund-raising coffee morning is Saturday 10th August 10am-1pm where there’ll be pre-loved books and jigsaws to purchase as well as a great selection of homemade cakes to have with your cuppa.
To keep our minds super active, Geoff (our volunteer quizmaster) has devised a summer family quiz based loosely on a French/Olympic theme. The quiz costs £2 and is available from the library and there are book tokens and French themed breakfasts as prizes. Please continue to support our library – all funds raised go towards keeping the library open. The library is a great community space and needs volunteers to help fund raise and support our various activities. So, if you’re thinking about volunteering, pop along and have a chat – we would love to meet you.
