Enderby Community Library August 2025

We’ve been super busy over the summer. In July we held our first ever afternoon tea which celebrated the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. Inevitably it was Pride and Prejudice themed with some of our library volunteers dressing up for the occasion. We even had Mr Darcy in attendance-courtesy of Parish Councillor Chris Tomlinson, who welcomed our 20 guests to the event. The food was delicious and plentiful, and the gentle Austen linked activities were enthusiastically attempted. We received tremendous feedback from our guests, and our intention is to do a different themed afternoon tea next year. Thanks again to our volunteers who, as ever, delivered a fantastic occasion.

Our weekly summer children’s sessions have been well attended with lots of crafting activities and LEGO building; all loosely linked to our Summer Reading Challenge of the Story Garden. Children have taken part in self-managed “Connect Four” tournaments as well as building the inevitable Marble Run and playing other games and jigsaws. New friendships have been made for both the children and their carers. Once again, our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who give up their time to staff these sessions.

The Summer Reading Challenge is going so well and is open until 6th September. For the first time we’ve had a mini challenge for the under 4’s and this has been so popular! Who knew gold stickers could be so appealing? The main challenge has been well supported too; lots of children have already completed the challenge and received their medals and certificates. It is brilliant to see their enthusiasm and we know that their reading skills have moved forward over the long summer holiday.

Looking forward to some diary events in autumn. Firstly, Saturday 4th October 2.30-4pm we will be celebrating National Poetry Day with a “Magical Mix of Modern Poems”. Julia will be gently guiding us through some recent poems in a relaxed and friendly fashion. Tickets, available from the library, are £5, and will include light refreshments. Secondly, Saturday October 18th at 7pm we are holding a fund- raising quiz in the Civic Centre. Tickets are £5 and available from the library. No refreshments are included but as usual, you can bring snacks and drinks to get the cogs whirring. Feedback from February’s quiz has been noted and the picture round WILL be included in the overall scoring!

Our normal activities are always open to new members, so if you fancy trying something different and meeting new people please pop along. Busy Hands is every Monday afternoon 2.30-4pm, Games Group is the first Wednesday of the month 2-4pm, Adult Social Crafting is Tuesday 9th September 2.30-4pm, Tots Playtime Wednesday 24th September 2-3pm and Creative Writing is Saturday 27th September 10.30am-12noon. And finally, our next coffee morning is Saturday 13th September 10am-1pm, so come along for a spot of home-baking, a good chat, a prize from the raffle and purchase a couple of pre-loved books and jigsaws. We look forward to seeing you!
