Enderby Community Library June 2024

Enderby Library welcomed Ben Jackson – a BBC Radio Leicester Presenter – who chatted to our library volunteers about why they volunteer, how they believe they make a difference to our community and what benefits they gain from volunteering. Ben was relaxed and informal and quickly put everyone at ease, helped inevitably by homemade cake of course – thank you Barbara! The piece was aired on his programme on 5th June during Volunteering week and was a super celebration of what our volunteers (and many others across the country) achieve daily. If you would like to help keep the library open, please pop in and chat to one of our volunteers. It can simply be a few hours a month to support our activities, you don’t have to commit to regular shifts. Drop in and see if you can help!

Summer has arrived and the Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is back on. Once again Leicestershire libraries are taking part in the SRC for children aged 4-11 years. It starts 6th July and runs until 6th September. The theme is “Marvellous Makers”, and we will be linking this into our French/Olympic children’s play sessions. Children register for the SRC at the library, they receive a chart and collect stickers over a period of 3 visits. The challenge for children is to read 6 books (or have them read to them). Once completed they are awarded a certificate and a fantastic GOLD (coloured) medal! It’s a great incentive to keep children engaged in the reading/learning zone over the long holidays and our local schools are very supportive of this. If you have children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces or neighbours please spread the word. There’ll be linked activities (picture trail, Word Search, colouring etc) in the library too. To add to the fun, children taking part in the challenge get a free entry to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and the 1620’s House and Garden provided they are with a full fee-paying adult. So come on down to the library and join!

As mentioned we are holding four specific French/Olympic themed activity sessions for children during the summer. The dates are Thursday – 18th and 25th July followed by Tuesday 13th and 20th August. There will, as usual, be a selection of games and crafting activities available. Sessions are £2 per child and children do need to be accompanied by an adult.

Our regular activities continue throughout July with Games group Wednesday 3rd and adult crafting Tuesday 9th; Busy Hands meet every Monday and Creative Writing Saturday 27th and our pre-schoolers session is Wednesday 31st. Our coffee morning is Saturday 13th July 10am – 1pm where there will be a super selection of homemade cakes, pre-loved books and jigsaws and an opportunity to purchase our Family Fun Quiz sheet themed around France and the Olympics – a bargain at only £2! No gold medals this time but we do have book tokens as prizes. If you can’t make it to the coffee morning, the quiz is available to purchase from the library in July and will run through to August.

All the funds raised from play sessions, coffee morning, events and our quiz go towards keeping the library open. We truly value your ongoing support. Have a great summer and we hope to see you soon!
