We’ve been busy since our last update. Our Valentine coffee morning was a hit and saw the children creating fabulous heart cards and there were also some heart themed cakes which were snaffled up by our romantic customers! Our second-hand book stall was incredibly popular – every book (hard or paperback) selling for 50p each. We also supported Danemill School’s Apprentice Scheme as one of their Year 6 pupils had a stall selling flower & vegetable seeds. Our next coffee morning is Saturday 15th April so do come along for a cuppa, a cake and a chat. Our book and jigsaw stalls are fully replenished and there’ll be the chance to win on the raffle or the tombola.
February half term saw some varied activities for both our pre-school children and their older counterparts. We put on three activities, and these were a combination of crafting and construction via Lego and the infamous marble run. There was also a nod to Shrove Tuesday with some Scotch pancake decorating and, of course, eating! We love supporting our younger customers and a huge thank you to Barbara and Audrey – two of our library volunteers who spearhead the fun. Our next Pre-school Playtime is Wednesday 29th March 2-3pm. We’re also holding a children’s Easter holiday session Tuesday 4th April in the afternoon – watch the library windows for further details.
Our adult community hasn’t been left out either. The Busy Hands Group meets every Monday afternoon and is going from strength to strength. Their activities range from toy-making to clothing with everything in between. Our over 60s Games group meets the first Wednesday of the month (next one is 5th April 2-4pm); our monthly adult crafting group (next meeting is 18th April 2.30-4pm) and our monthly Creative Writing Session (next one 25th March 10.30-12pm with the one after on April 22nd) are all thriving but still eager to grow. So, if you fancy starting something different, then pop along to one of our groups and you will be warmly welcomed.
We’re now hurtling into spring and like the season the library is getting ready to put on some new activities. The first of these is an exhibition and talk on the foundation and early days of The Journal by Douglas Maas, the founding editor. Douglas will talk about how The Journal began and will host a Q&A session. The event will take place Saturday 25th March 2-4pm and tickets which are available from the library are £5 which includes refreshments. All ticket proceeds go to supporting the library’s upkeep.
Another planned activity follows on from the success of our Jubilee fabric wreaths last year. We are running a Spring Fabric Wreath Making session Saturday 1st April 1.30-4pm and tickets cost £12. All materials will be provided for you to make a stunning Easter/Spring wreath. Children over 8 years who are with adults making a wreath are welcome to craft a variety of Easter decorations at a cost of £2. Tickets are available from the library.
At 7.30 pm on April 20th we will be celebrating (slightly early as it is 26th) William Shakespeare’s birthday with a talk given by Julia Pritchard and will feature some of Shakespeare’s famous speeches. Julia will help to explain and contextualise these speeches and their relevance to their time. Tickets, which cost £5 and include refreshments, are available from the library. Again, all ticket proceeds go to supporting the library’s upkeep.
And finally, all the library volunteers would like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm in participating and supporting our activities. It’s great to see our community thrive and to receive feedback about what works and what needs tweaking. We are a Warm Space so feel free to come into the library to see what we can offer. We’d also love to get your tips and thoughts about keeping warm and saving money or reducing costs so we can share them with our wider audience. Keep watching our FB page and the library windows for other activities and we hope to see you soon.
