Enderby Community Library May 2025

Our May coffee morning celebrated VE day in style. The library looked the part with some great displays which included personal memorabilia from World War 2. Many of the cakes, trifles and scones had a street party theme although we were pleased our volunteers resisted the urge to use powdered eggs! Some of the volunteers dressed up as land “girls” too and there were several people who could remember VE day and the street parties and were happy to share their memories. There was even a rousing rendition of “We’ll meet again” which was both poignant and joyful. Thank you to everyone who provided bunting, helped to set up and more importantly gave time, to ensure Enderby Community library remembered VE day in style.

Our Tots Playtime goes from strength to strength – the next sessions are 25th June and 30th July. There are sensory toys as well as crafting to support motor skills. We currently have Mums, Dads and several grandparents who bring their pre-schoolers. Their feedback is that it’s an easy and relaxed session and they can chat to other adults too!

Something to note for the summer holidays. We are offering 5 activity sessions for primary aged children. They are Wednesday afternoons 16th and 23rd July and 6th, 13th, 20th August. There will be a selection of building toys, jigsaws and games as well as an appropriate craft activity. We will link these to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) theme of the “Story Garden.” The SRC is a Leicestershire County Council supported scheme in which children read books – on any topic – while collecting little incentives and hopefully a medal and certificate on completion. It’s a fabulous way to keep reading skills up to scratch over the long summer holiday.

Linking to the Story Garden theme we are aiming to tidy up the small patch of ground outside the library and King St car park, so we will be looking out for some help, I’m sure. Still about gardens, the Enderby Events committee have asked the library to sell wristbands and maps for Enderby Open Gardens event taking place Sunday June 8th – price £4 – they are available now. And finally, the library volunteers are again organising the annual Garden excursion (to the same garden as last year by popular demand!). Tickets for this are £9.50 which includes refreshments and are available from the library. All proceeds go to the garden owner’s charity of choice.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth and we are celebrating this with a themed afternoon tea party to be held Saturday 26th July 2.30 – 4pm in the library. Tickets are £10 and will include a full afternoon tea and some Austen themed gentle activities. Dressing in the Austen style is, of course, optional!

And finally, our regular activities – Busy Hands (every Monday) Games group (first Wednesday in the month) and Adult Social crafting (next session 10th June) and Creative Writing (last Saturday of the month) continue with enthusiasm. Please pop into the library if you would like to know more about any of these. New starters are always welcome. Don’t forget our next coffee morning is Saturday 14th June 10am – 1pm as we would love your support for this!
