Enderby Community Library September 2024

We’ve certainly been busy again. September saw the end of the Summer Reading challenge and once again it was a big success – we had 104 children register and over 50% achieved their gold medal and certificate. A big thank you to our local schools for their support in this too. Also, in September, we hosted “Enderby Wills” – which was a talk given by Elizabeth York from Enderby Heritage Society. Around 25 people attended, and they gained an insightful and interesting perspective of past times. We’re hoping to continue this collaboration with EHS so look out for further updates.

Our Adult Social crafters have been crafting some lovely greeting cards. Their next session is Tuesday 8th October 2.30-4pm when the theme is autumn decorations. We would love to see new members, so if you want to try something different, do come along to this session and find a warm welcome from Barbara and Audrey, our volunteers, who run this activity and provide excellent cake!

Our informal play hour for pre-schoolers is going from strength to strength. It’s held on the last Wednesday of the month 2-3pm – 30th October and 27th November. The session is suitable for babies – play mats are available – as well as tots where there’s age appropriate crafting and other activities available.

Our Busy Hands group meets every Monday 2.30-4pm and some of the members are working on items to sell over the autumn Xmas period to raise funds for the library. Again, newcomers are always welcomed so, regardless of your skill level, if you fancy knitting, crocheting, sewing etc then pop along to meet this super sociable group. Another sociable session is our Over 60s Games Group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month 2-4pm, 2nd October & 6th November. As well as playing games, this group debates and sorts the world out – always a good afternoon! And finally, if a more reflective pastime is more your thing, why not try our Creative Writing session – Saturdays 26th October and 30th November – led by Julia, a former teacher of English and one of our volunteers?

Julia is also hosting our celebration of National Poetry Day on Saturday October 5th. Her theme for this is Desert Island Poems, so get ready to choose a poem that you would take to your island! Tickets are £5 which includes refreshments and are available from the library. Also in October, Saturday 26th 2-4pm, Dave Andrews a former BBC Radio Leicester presenter and producer is presenting his experiences around the discovery of the body of Richard III – “The Man, the Mystery & the Car Park”. Tickets, also available from the library, are £5 and include refreshments.

Our next coffee morning is Saturday 12th October. Once again there’ll be scrumptious homemade cakes, a fun tombola, pre-loved books at 50 pence each (great bargains!) and of course, our regular raffle. We absolutely love to see you and really do appreciate everyone’s support. And finally, if you would like to become a volunteer and find out what it takes to keep our community library open, we would love to hear from you. We have volunteers who specialise in supporting our group sessions or prefer to concentrate on fund raising activities rather than the traditional library work. Full training will always be given. So, whether you have, a few hours free a week or a month, pop into the library and ask a volunteer about what we do.
