Enderby United Reformed Church

In the early 1800s a group of protestant dissenters gathered in their homes to worship. As they grew in numbers they moved to a barn on Beggars Lane.

They soon realised that to welcome more to the congregation they needed a building nearer the village.

They managed to buy a piece of land on 10th October 1813 from George Nurby and built an Independent Chapel. It was opened in 1822 so this year we are celebrating 200 years since that happened.

The building was licensed for the solemnisation of marriages (article in the General Advertiser for the Midland Counties Friday 4th January 1850) but by 1856 they realised that it needed extending. This was completed in 1860

The access to the building was by footpath (no cars in those days!)

We have had a Jubilee party; Flower festival; Art festival; and on October 23rd we had a special celebration service led by our Moderator Revd. Geoffrey Clarke.

After the service we had a buffet and a special cake which Geoffrey cut. The East Midlands Synod Banner in the background was made by members of the churches within the Synod to celebrate 50 years since the United Reformed Church was formed.
