Measure for Measure - RSC Stratford

‘Measure for Measure’ is not known as one of Shakespeare’s problem plays for nothing! (leaving out the technical difficulties which caused a delay when the trapdoor stuck!)

The performance, watched by NALT at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre in Stratford last month, was extremely well-edited by Director Emily Burns.  This modern and really relevant production omits some of the sleazy low-life world of 16th century Vienna – that of pimps and prostitution  – and instead focusses on the corruption of the politically powerful ruling elite.  Powerful males versus a virtuous young woman seeking to become a nun.

The play is described as ‘a slick, bold and contemporary thriller of hypocrisy and corruption’.  Isabella is told that no one will believe her and later, when she cries: “To whom shall I complain?  Who will believe me?” the audience gave a sharp intake of breath in recognition of the “Me too” dilemma – words that resonate today.

The ending of the play can be directed as happy or not by just a gesture. This adaptation was different: Isabella suddenly broke free from the Duke’s proposal of marriage and dashed up the steps and jumped!  We had mixed ideas about this!  It has been described as a suicide but there was no sense of shock and distress in the audience reaction.  I think the audience felt it was more a liberation from the unattractive options presented to her.

A great cast included Adam James as the Duke, Tom Mothersdale as Angelo, Isis Hainsworth as Isabella and Oli Higginson as Claudio all of whom were making their RSC debut, and what an impressive debut they made.  The amazing, yet simple set, also added to what is an excellent production; the RSC at its best.

Some NALT members opted to spend time in Stratford rather than attending the play and also had a really enjoyable day out.

Our next trip is to see Done to Death by Jove, a two-hander at the Venture Theatre, Ashby-de-la-Zouch (a new venue for NALT).  More about that next time!
