Mr John Warden

John was born in 1930 in Chapel street Enderby, but his mum and dad, Jack & Lilly Warden, then moved to Titchbourne Cottages which is in The Nook area of Enderby. As a child he played a lot of football on Enderby Park. When he was 16 he started at Empire Stone in Narborough as an apprentice carpenter and when he was 18 he had to do his national service in Egypt for 2 years.

When he came out of the army he went back to Empire Stone to finish off his apprenticeship. He took under his wing a young Enderby lad called Craig Harper who is still to this day a carpenter and remembers John Warden being the first person to speak to him on his first day. This is just like John Warden’s character – he had always a kind word for everyone. Throughout his life in Enderby he made an awful lot of great friends and was until his death a very well known character driving around the village on his mobility scooter, often being seen on it down at Fosse Park. John also played one of the very first games for Enderby Town football club down Leicester Lane on the land of Enderby Hall. John is also mentioned in the book called Enderby Town Football Club, Forged In Granite, written by local writer Steve Postlethwaite. John played many a sport including football, tennis, badminton and bowls, all in the village.

He was one of the oldest remaining true Enderby icons and will be very sadly missed by everyone. He passed away last month, aged 91. His family David, Lisa, Luke, James and Sian want to thank everyone for their support at this time and thank all who came to his funeral at Enderby Church.

Although you have gone, we will always be together, and your spirt will live on in each of us forever. When we look to the sky, we will look for the brightest star as that will be you Grandad looking down on us.
