The weather is getting hot now and I can’t think of anything better than sitting with a cold drink and a fan, or you may prefer sitting in the sun, with a book. Fortunately we have hundreds of books to choose from with a dedicated section for crime and adventure as they seem to be most popular with our patrons, although we also have plenty of romance, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and biographies. As well as large print and audiobooks. Our childrens and teenage sections are also bursting with books waiting for them to find their next favourite book. Come down to the library to have a browse.
A huge thank you to everyone who made our Summer Fair and raffle a huge success! Our volunteers worked so hard preparing the event, and on the day setting up the stalls selling gifts and crafts and plants. There was fun to be had on the tombola, bottle-bola, and lucky dip for children. We also had flags for children to colour in for a free activity.
We also drew the raffle winners! Congratulations to Jean (pictured on the right with our volunteer Dave) who won our star prize, a luxury hamper donated by Asda. We were pleased that Jean won a grand prize as she is an avid user of the library, attends our groups and is a supporter of the library. A huge thank you to all of the local companies who donated prizes for our raffle and everyone who bought a raffle ticket or came to the fair. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year so it’s vital that it is supported. A full list of the companies who donated prizes and winners can be found on our website (nandlclibrary.org).

July sees the return of the Summer Reading Challenge! This is one of our favourite times of the year as we see children coming into the library to tell us about their reading in exchange for stickers and prizes, and we love awarding medals to those who complete the challenge.
For those new to the challenge, any library member aged 4 – 12 can join in, it’s free to join the library and free to enter the challenge. The challenge runs from Saturday 5th July – Saturday 6th September, during which you must read 6 (or more!) books. Ebooks, comics, audiobooks books from home or from the library all count, children just need to tell our librarians what they’ve been reading and after the third visit to the library, when 6 books have been read the challenge is completed! This year’s challenge theme is Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors. This exciting new theme will inspire children to tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature. So have a look at our garden and discuss your favourite plants when visiting the library, when completing the challenge children also get a seeded bookmark so they can grow some plants of their own. More information will be on our website soon.
June was Pride month, we displayed a poster and selection of books dealing with LGBTQA+ issues. These included My Policeman by Bethan Roberts which is set at the time when homosexuality was still illegal and Think Again by Jaqueline Wilson, which features a gay relationship, and is by a gay author.
In August you will see us at the Party in the Park, at Narborough park on August 2nd, so come to our stall, say hello and find out more about what the library has to offer our villages.
