Last month, NALT members enjoyed a trip to Curve to see “Girl From The North Country”. We were not sure what to expect as it was hard to imagine a jukebox musical based on Bob Dylan’s music. Andrew Turner, one of our members wrote the following review:-
“This was not really a musical but a play with music. At times the play and the music were complementary and at others less so. Back in the 1960s Dylan’s records were part of the soundtrack of student life. Dylan started out as a protest singer but over the decades had phases of folk, country and western, gospel and experimental. The show referenced most of these phases. It is difficult to mention individuals when so many of the cast were featured on lead vocals. No weak link to be found anywhere. The versatile backing band were first class and the ensemble vocals outstanding.
So we come to the Play. Once tuned into the American accents, the clarity and diction were really good. The setting of the guesthouse was almost claustrophobic with only the occasional glimpse of the outside world. Within this space an eclectic mix of social misfits operated. We saw persecution, poverty, lack of opportunity, exploitation and people doing whatever it took to get by. At times they seemed to repeat the same mistakes. At the end there did seem some hope of change. I expect that opinion about this show will be divided between those who see something profound being said about life and others who ask what it was all about.”
The NALT committee will be meeting soon to organise the next programme of events and welcome suggestions to include in the bookings. We like to visit a variety of venues in the Midlands area including Nottingham, Birmingham, Coventry, Warwick, Northampton and Milton Keynes as well as our local theatre, Curve. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our membership secretary, Alison for further information: alison.polydor@gmail.com or 07947256154.
