In April NALT members travelled to The Priory Theatre, Kenilworth to see their production of “Mr Bennet’s Bride.” The theatre with just 120 seats is run as an amateur company, all volunteers. The bar and foyer area have recently been refurbished and the front of house staff were most friendly and helpful.
This play is described as a period comedy prequel to Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” It gave an insight into why Mrs Bennet of “Pride and Prejudice” fame was such an unsuitable wife for Mr Bennet. We saw him entranced by the refreshingly lively Miss Gardiner whose irritating giggling and shallowness were kept under control until after the engagement.
Those who know “Pride and Prejudice” will know the problems arising because the Bennets had five daughters and no sons to inherit the estate. Very amusingly, the play ended with a succession of squalling babies — every one a girl — and Mr Bennet’s increasing despair!
Our August to December programme is now available for booking. Highlights include “Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical,” based on the band’s true story. It is a feel good, high energy show about friendship, community and music taking place at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham.
In October, we have secured tickets for “An Evening with Lucy Worsley” at The Royal and Derngate, Northampton. Lucy will delve into the fascinating life of Agatha Christie, sharing her research based on the writer’s personal letters and papers.
November, sees a return to Curve for The “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel “ based on the best selling novel by Deborah Moggach which inspired the much loved film. The production is touring the UK prior to The West End. Starring the icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Academy, BAFTA and Golden Globe-Award winner, Hayley Mills (Wild at Heart, Pollyanna, The Parent Trap), household favourite and screen and stage star Paul Nicholas (Jesus Christ Superstar, Just Good Friends, Eastenders) and Rula Lenska (Rock Follies, Coronation Street, Eastenders).
In December we travel to Milton Keynes to see the critically acclaimed Smash Hit Musical, “Six.” From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII remix 500 years of historical heartbreak into a celebration of girl power. The last pick up leaves Littlethorpe at 1:15 pm so we will have some time in Milton Keynes for Christmas Shopping and refreshments prior to the performance which starts at 5 pm. With the publication of the latest programme, now would be an excellent time to join NALT.
Membership of NALT is open to all Journal readers. There are 3 pick up points in Littlethorpe and Narborough or you can use your own transport to the venue. Please contact our membership secretary, Pauline on 0116 2751299 or email pollyaha@icloud.com for more information.
