Narborough & Littlethorpe Community Library April 2023

It seems only yesterday that we were preparing decorations for the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Now, less than a year later, our Busy Hands group, who meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month, are busy knitting, crocheting and sewing decorations for the Coronation of Charles III to go alongside the colourful crowns being created by local nursery schools. Look out for the decorations around the library, including the King on his throne.

As part of the Coronation celebrations, Monday 8th May has been designated a day to encourage volunteering, The Big Help Out. National charities, from the Scouts to Age UK and from the RSPB to the RNLI, will be organising special events and initiatives to highlight the benefits of volunteering. Your community library is also a registered charity, dependent entirely on volunteers, and we’re always looking for new people to join the team. If King Charles has inspired you to explore volunteering, check out our website at https://nandlclibrary.org and follow the links to volunteering. It’s great fun!

Fundraising is essential to the library as we receive no statutory funding, and two events in the last month have contributed over £350 to help towards running costs. A quiz night on 24th March attracted over 50 people with a team from Kirby Muxloe Library walking away with the trophy, and on 1st April there were no fools around at the regular pre-loved book sale. The next book sale will be at the library on Sat 13th May so make a date to come and stock up for summer reading.

An important individual in any community is the Community Police Officer and there’s a chance to meet ours at the library on Sat 20th May between 11.00 and noon. Come along to say hello, ask questions and get advice on anything to do with security. You could browse the Crime section of the bookshelves while you’re there – but keep it strictly fiction!

Your library membership offers access to more than books; there’s a world of information through the digital library available on the free-to-use library computers. You can access consumer advice through Which? Online, read current online newspapers and magazines or historic newspapers through the British Newspaper Archive. You can also explore your own history with the Ancestry and Find My Past library editions. Last year the 1921 census was released, initially behind a paywall but it is now available for free on your library’s public computers. Who lived in your house in 1921?

If you’re not confident with using computers, remember we have a weekly Digital Drop-In session on Wednesdays from 10.30 – 12.30 where you can get help on how to use your laptop, tablet, or mobile.
