A busy first day saw 20 eager young readers sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency, so we’re well on the way to our target. The programme is designed to encourage children aged between 4 and 12 to continue reading during the long summer holidays. Reading for pleasure has been shown to improve children’s wellbeing, with higher levels of empathy and greater self-esteem supporting their ability to cope with difficult situations and improving their resilience.
Children can sign up for the challenge at any time and receive a fun pack to guide them through their reading adventure and log their progress towards completing the challenge of reading six books. There are rewards along the way and a medal and certificate for those completing the challenge. Two special events are planned during the holidays to bring the young readers together and share their experiences. On Wednesday 26 July from 9-11am there’s a Reading Breakfast and on Wednesday 16 August a mystery morning with Secret Books for Secret Readers – pick up a book wrapped in brown paper and discover what’s inside.
While the children keep track of their own reading, we’ve prepared a tracker to chart the overall progress of young readers from Narborough and Littlethorpe, which you can see on the wall outside the library.
One of the joys of the library is having such a wide choice of books, but that can sometimes seem a bit overwhelming and we can tend to fall back on the writers and genres we know. How to choose if you want to try something new? The volunteer librarians are always happy to offer suggestions, and the library Facebook page shares recommendations so don’t be afraid to branch out. If you like to discuss your reading with others then the library book club could be just what you’re looking for. Each month one book is selected for everybody to read, and the members get together on a Thursday evening to share their thoughts over a coffee. If you’d like to join the club, ask in the library.
Enjoy your summer reading.
