Blaby District Council is embracing active travel with a long-term vision to make walking and cycling a first choice for short journeys in the District.
A new Active Travel Strategy sets out how the authority will work with external partners to enhance existing pedestrian routes as well as create new ones.
A working group will be established, made up of community groups, Parish Councils, schools and businesses, which will help inform the delivery of the strategy.
Public engagement, including education campaigns will be key to help change perception and promote the benefits of active travel.
Close liaison with housing developers will also be essential. This will ensure new communities feature attractive, safe and comprehensive walking and cycling connections.
Councillor Cheryl Cashmore, Blaby District Council Portfolio Holder for Health, Leisure, Climate and Economic Development, said: “Increasing cycling and walking presents a major opportunity
to tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges. These include enhancing air quality, combating climate change, promoting health and wellbeing and alleviating road congestion.
“We see our new Active Travel Strategy as a long-term plan to alter attitudes and remove obstacles so that walking and cycling is the first choice for people making short journeys. We
also want to make sure our routes are fully accessible to anyone who may have restricted mobility.
“It is essential our communities are connected to amenities such as schools, shops, leisure facilities and commercial centres. This will make leaving the car at home an easy and attractive
proposition. Our strategy and action plan gives us the blueprint to make this happen.”
The Active Travel Strategy aligns with the Council’s net zero ambitions and national objectives to encourage more physical activity and reduce carbon emissions.
